Indonesia President Says Putin and Xi Will Attend G20 Summit in Person

Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Aug. 18 emphasized in an interview with Bloomberg News, that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to attend the November G20 summit in Bali in person. “Xi Jinping will come. President Putin has also told me he will come,” Bloomberg quoted Widodo.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry declined to confirm the report, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin and Widodo had phone talks, on Aug. 18, to discuss preparations for the summit in Bali, among other things, and that Putin hadn’t decided yet whether to attend in person or by video link.

But Jokowi (as he is called) clearly has not backed down despite repeated and severe pressure attempts by the United States to keep Putin out of the G20. The Bloomberg writeup also quoted him: “The rivalry of the big countries is indeed worrying. What we want is for this region is to be stable, peaceful, so that we can build economic growth. And, I think, not only Indonesia: Asian countries also want the same thing.” (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-19/xi-and-putin-to-attend-g-20-summit-in-indonesia-jokowi-says?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_content=middleeast&utm_source=twitter&cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&sref=6uww027M )
