According to a report in Der Spiegel, the German Army won’t make it to grow to the dimension planned by the German government. The current volunteer system does not allow it, a Bundeswehr spokesman told the German weekly. Moreover, the Army is losing recruits. This year, the number of recruits sank by 7%, confirming last year’s trend. A report cited by Der Spiegel says that the difficulties in recruiting are impairing the quality required for the Army personnel. Furthermore, the 203,000 personnel target set by 2031 won’t be reached. According to Der Spiegel, the reasons for the drop in recruiting are demographic as well as related to the labor market situation.
