Republicans Hear from Jordan and Scalise Prior to Voting for House Speaker

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives met today at 5 p.m. in a closed session to hear from Jim Jordan (OH) and Steve Scalise (LA), the two announced candidates for Speaker of the House, to replace the ousted Kevin McCarthy (CA). The House is scheduled to begin the voting procedure on Oct. 11.

It is reported that both candidates agreed that there would have to be a compromise with the Senate over some level of funding for Ukraine. When earlier, CNN asked Jordan whether he would be open to tying Ukraine aid to Israel funding, the White House plan, he deferred.

Much ado is made about the need to have a Speaker immediately, so that the U.S. can send a lot of weapons to Israel, but that is just so much smoke. Israel spent last night making sure that they slaughtered more Palestinians than Hamas had slaughtered Israelis in the previous four days, and they have more than enough military might to slaughter as many of the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza as they wish.
