EU Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell struggled to defend the Western narrative on the ongoing Israel/Palestine conflict during a speech Monday. Speaking at an EU Ambassadors Conference, Borrell called for a “humanitarian pause counterbalanced by an access to hostages with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as a first step to their release.” But showing the growing revolt taking place against Israel’s barbaric actions, he also warned that an “overreaction by the Israelis in the end makes them lose the support of the international community.”
Borrell also said that the “unfolding tragedy in the Middle East is the outcome of a collective political and moral failure.” He added that the failure boiled down to “our real lack of willingness to solve the Israeli-Palestinian problem.”
