Open letter to Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic
Subject: Appeal for a French policy for peace in Ukraine
Dear President of the Republic,
This is a critical moment for France, whose historic role as a power of balance and peace is being put to the test by the conflict in Ukraine. Recent events, including the authorization given by the United States to Ukraine to strike Russia in depth with American medium-range missiles, mark an escalation that could precipitate the world into a Third World War.
We, the signatories of this letter, wish to express our deep concern at this situation, which affects not only the future of France, but also global security. These decisions, although taken by our allies, do not automatically imply the support of France, a sovereign nation committed to diplomacy. Military escalation, under any pretext, will only bring more human suffering and uncontrollable geopolitical chaos.
In particular, we were struck by your recent statements, in which you described as “absolutely right” the possibility of Ukraine striking Russia in depth with medium-range missiles supplied by the United States. On Monday (Nov. 18), Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot declared that the use of our missiles on Russian soil remains an “option.” On Tuesday (Nov. 19), we learned that Ukraine had fired its first U.S. missiles deep into Russia. On Wednesday (Nov. 20), Ukraine used British Storm Shadow missiles to target Russian territory for the first time.
