Yesterday, in Romania’s first round presidential rerun, George Simion of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), far outdistanced two rivals. With over 95% of the ballots counted, Simion has 40.52%, Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan has 20.91%, and former Senator Crin Antonescu 20.30%. The last conceded his third-place finish, leaving Dan as the challenger to Simion in the May 18 runoff. Tonight Marcel Ciolacu, Prime Minister since 2023, resigned. He is of the same Social Democratic Party (PSD) as Crin Antonescu.

Thus, once again, voters in Europe will choose the presidential candidate who will drop Russophobia and adopt a neutral, working relationship with Moscow.
