The U.S. in Kiev issued an urgent warning the morning of Nov. 20 that Russia might launch “a significant air attack,” closing the embassy and telling employees to shelter in place, according to the New York Times. The warning came only one day after Ukraine had reportedly launched ATACMS missiles into Russian territory. The Embassy said it had “received specific information” about a potential attack, but did not offer details. However it did claim that its closure was not linked to the updated Russian nuclear doctrine announced Nov. 19.
Greece, Italy, and Spain have also closed embassies in Kiev in response.
