The family of the slain Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is calling on the Trump administration to give them the opportunity to review the soon-to-be declassified files on his April 4, 1968 assassination prior to their public release. President Donald Trump has just ordered the declassification in a Jan. 23 Executive Order (see separate slug.
In a statement issued Jan. 23 through the Atlanta-based King Center’s Instagram account, reported by Fox 5 News Atlanta the family said: “today, our family has learned that President Trump has ordered the declassification of the remaining records pertaining to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, and our father Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
“For us, the assassination of our father is a deeply personal family loss that we have endured over the last 56 years,” they added. “We hope to be provided the opportunity to review the files as a family prior to its public release.”
The King family has never accepted the official explanation for King’s murder, in which James Earl Ray was allegedly the sole culprit. Ray was convicted but later recanted and the King family has for decades demanded a more thorough and serious investigation.
