Tesla Opens Second ‘Megafactory’ in Shanghai, for Electric Batteries

Elon Musk’s Tesla has now opened its second “Megafactory” in Shanghai. Its first such Megafactory, which produces Tesla cars, with about two-thirds of vehicles produced sold in China, and one-third exported to overseas markets such as Europe. The new Megafactory is producing energy-storage batteries known as Megapacks, which are also for the global market.

Xinhua notes that the new Megafactory was constructed in less than a year, showing that Musk has shown the capacity to produce at China-style speed. They add that Musk also expressed in January that Tesla “is ready to deepen investment in and cooperation with China, and play a positive role in promoting U.S.-China economic and trade interactions.”
