March 12, 2025 (EIRNS)—The Romanian Constitutional Court rejected the appeal by Presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, claiming he “does not have fundamental requisites to defend democracy.” Georgescu had appealed to the Constitutional Court after his candidacy had been rejected by the Electoral Commission, although he had filed many more signatures than were required. Georgescu had won the first round of the national elections, but the elections were invalidated under the pretext that he had received financing from abroad (Russia).
After the court ruling, Georgescu issued the following statement: “Today the masters have decided: no equality, no freedom, no fraternity for the Romanians. Long live France and Brussels, long live their colony called Romania!”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at his press briefing that “This is trampling on all norms of democracy in the center of Europe,” he told reporters. “Romania in this case has taken the path of disregarding democracy as such.” TASS headlined its coverage: “Romania Tramples on Democratic Norms by Removing Georgescu from Polls—Kremlin”
