March 4, 2025 (EIRNS)—While President Donald Trump has not questioned the U.S. membership in NATO anytime recently, there has been a growing volley of comments from individuals around him for the U.S. to leave the Alliance. On March 2, Elon Musk posted on X: “I always wondered why NATO continued to exist even though its nemesis and reason to exist, The Warsaw Pact, had dissolved.” The day before, he responded “I agree” to a post that said, “It’s time to leave NATO and the UN.”

On March 1, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) posted on X, “Get us out of NATO.” He was responding to a chart showing the U.S.’s funding of NATO at 70%. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) wrote in response to Lee’s post: “NATO is a Cold War relic that needs to be relegated to a talking kiosk at the Smithsonian.”

In the meantime, NATO officials are desperately trying to calm each other down over the thought. An article in the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Liberty revealed some of this, quoting from an “alliance ambassador” who said: “The Ukraine track has changed, but not the NATO track. They’ve [the Trump administration] been pretty tough on Ukraine but remain committed to NATO.”
