March 8, 2025 (EIRNS)—Following his March 6 visit with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Zimbabwean Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Amon Murwira told reporters at a Moscow press conference that “Zimbabwe is currently working on fulfilling the requirements necessary to join BRICS. We are at the application stage and are awaiting a response in line with the consensus reached within the BRICS framework.”
Murwira said that Zimbabwe is looking to engage in associations like the BRICS to boost its economic potential, as reported by ZBC News. “According to our constitution, we must not only be Pan African, but also join progressive groups that are good for the socioeconomic growth of our country and for promoting peace in the world and normally, peace is fostered through economic development.”
Zimbabwe would be the sixth African nation to become part of the BRICS, joining founding member South Africa, along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Uganda. BRICS is currently comprised of 19 member and partner nations, with many more applications pending.
