The BRICS nations, full and partner, have thrown their support behind “the expeditious reconstruction of the civil infrastructure” of the Gaza Strip, “with a central role by the Palestinians, as agreed in the Emergency Arab Summit on Palestine, on 4 March 2025.” That was the summit, held in Egypt and chaired by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, where the Egyptian plan for the three-phase reconstruction of the Gaza Strip without displacing its people was presented, discussed, and then approved by the Arab nations.
The BRICS support is stated in the Chair’s Statement, issued by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and based on the consensus reached by the participants in the April 28-29 BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had reported that the ministers had discussed the multiple crisis situations around the world at length, with “the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories and across the Middle East in general, as well as in many regions of the African continent … [being] a matter of special concern.” The final statement, albeit without using the term “genocide,” reports the “grave concern” of the BRICS nations about what is taking place in Palestine following the collapse of the ceasefire and the resumption of Israeli bombings and obstruction of humanitarian aid; their “adamant” opposition to any forced displacement of the Palestinian people, under any pretext; and full support for the two-state solution.
It should be noted, also, that Saudi Arabia did participate in the April 29 meeting of the BRICS full and partner members, in its capacity as a country invited to join the BRICS group, as Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji explained in his address to that meeting.
Evidently, the Saudi Kingdom prefers to continue to work with the BRICS without joining, and the other BRICS members are willing to accept that. As the Saudi Press Agency reported it, Elkereiji “expressed appreciation for the invitation [to join] extended to the Kingdom … and affirmed Saudi Arabia’s aspiration to collaborate within multilateral platforms toward a prosperous future full of opportunities for the Global South and the world at large…. He also expressed the Kingdom’s hope to support the BRICS group and the broader international community in playing an active role in resolving escalating crises and easing global tensions.”
