Finnish President Mooting Possibility of Peace Talks in Vatican, but Lavrov Objects

Finnish President Alexander Stubb is claiming that there will be a meeting next week hosted by the Vatican and including representatives from the U.S., Europe, Russia and Ukraine. Stubb recently had a meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican and came out with the claim on May 21. There has been no comment on such a meeting by the Vatican. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he had no indication of such a meeting.

The mercurial Stubb may be conducting his own one-man show that nobody else has joined. It may also be a subtle move by this newest member of NATO to “sneak” the European leaders into a discussion that should be none of their business. Nevertheless, Stubb claimed, “We are entering a phase where Europe is also involved—and that is what we have been hoping for from the beginning.”
