Numerous news agencies reported on the response of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to demands by U.S. President Donald Trump to send U.S. troops to Mexico. While speaking at a university opening on May 3, Sheinbaum was asked to clarify reports made by the Wall Street Journal on May 2, that Trump had pressured her in a mid-April phone call to allow U.S. troops to be deployed inside Mexico to combat fentanyl-smuggling cartels.
President Sheinbaum said, “In one of the calls, [Trump] said, ‘How can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the U.S. Army come in to help you,’” as reported by Reuters. “And you know what I told him? No, President Trump, the territory is inviolable, sovereignty is inviolable, sovereignty is not for sale, sovereignty is loved and defended,” the President said, adding that, while the two countries can collaborate, “we will never accept the presence of the United States military in our territory.”
