Air Traffic Control Issues Scuttle Dozens of United Airlines Flights at Newark

Due to equipment failure, long-term staffing shortages of air traffic controllers, the current walk-out of 20% of air traffic controllers, and a consistent rate of flight delays of greater than 40%, United Airlines, which has already reduced flights at Newark Liberty Airport (EWR) because of construction on runways, announced on May 3 that it would eliminate another 35 flights there. Of the nation’s largest airports, EWR is considered to have the longest-term trouble with staffing shortages and outdated infrastructure.

This past week United Airlines alone reported that at EWR:

On April 30, some 3% of flights were canceled, and 44% of flights were delayed.

On May 1, some 18% of flights were canceled, and 44% of flights were delayed.
