Romania's Constitutional Court Closes Off Any Investigation of Vote Fraud

Today Romania’s Constitutional Court rejected an election challenge filed by presidential candidate George Simion, calling his claims of foreign interference “unfounded.” The court stated that the ruling is final and pledged to provide a full explanation at a later date. Simion labeled the court’s decision a “continuation of a coup d’état” and vowed to continue his political fight.

In November 2024, the same court had annulled the first round of a presidential vote, when Calin Georgescu, Simion’s colleague, won. Then the court cited “irregularities” and “intelligence claims” of external meddling. While the muddy claims of Russian interference were proven to be groundless, not only was Georgescu not allowed to stand, but also he was disallowed from running again.
