Even as the Zelensky regime and its British-US enablers crowed June 1 that `Operation Spiderweb’ is “proof” that Ukraine will be able to continue the war against Russia until Europe has sufficiently rearmed itself to join in the war, the Commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, General-Major Mykhailo Drapaty, announced his resignation. The ostensible reason he cited was that 12 service members had been killed, and 60 others wounded that same morning, when a Russian missile struck the 239th Polygon training ground, north of the city of Dnipro.
Is that the sole reason he resigned? Is the Ukrainian military beginning to crumble? EIR does not know the answer to those questions. We do know, however, that when Gen-Maj Drapaty took personal command of the eastern front in January, by assuming the command of the military’s “Khortytsia” operational-strategic group, It was viewed by some military analysts as a sign that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) was getting its act together, at least on one important segment of the front line. While he had commanded the Ground Forces since November of 2024, he was given command of the key Khorytsia group after its previous commander lost the town of Velikaya Novosyolka, in the southern Donbas, to the Russians.
