Former two-term Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, long a victim of political persecution, issued this statement over the weekend amidst widely circulating rumors that the country’s three-man Supreme Court is likely to rule very soon, possibly as early as tomorrow, to uphold her conviction and sentencing in a 2022 trumped-up corruption case, which an appeals court upheld in 2024.. She was sentenced to six-years in prison and banned from any future political activity. The Supreme Court, which today functions as an appendage of the Milei government, isn’t known for being quick or efficient and it can often take months or years for a case like this to be processed.

But President Javier Milei is hysterical that Fernández just announced her candidacy for the Buenos Aires provincial legislature, and has a good chance of winning in September in a very turbulent and polarized internal political situation. If it is going to make a ruling, the Court must do so before July 19, which is when candidates lists are officially presented and reportedly are protected from prosecution.
