Russia To Build Large-Capacity Nuclear Reactors in Uzbekistan

Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, signed an agreement on June 20 with Uzbekistan’s Atomic Energy Agency to proceed with the feasibility study of building a large-capacity nuclear power plant in the Central Asian country. This was concluded on the sidelines of the June 18-21 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Rosatom already had signed an agreement with the Uzbek government to provide 55MW small modular nuclear reactors. “The small modular nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is the first export product of modern small power plants on the planet,” Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev told reporters in St. Petersburg. However, he also simultaneously announced that Russia had agreed to complete a study to build two VVER 1200 nuclear power plants, with an installed capacity of 1,000 MW each. There would also be an option to further build two additional 1,000 MW reactors, he said.
