U.S. bankruptcies, having fallen from 2008-2010 highs to their lowest level in 2022, are surging again, according to statistics released by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.
U.S. non-business bankruptcy filings—largely those of households—rose in the first quarter of 2025, to 505,777—a 32.3% increase from the level of the corresponding first quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, U.S. business bankruptcy filings in the first quarter of 2025, leapt to 23,309—an increase of 77.1% from the corresponding first quarter of 2022.
