Venezuelan President Calls on Global South, World Powers To Convoke Mideast Peace Summit

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro reported on his June 23 “Con Maduro +” show, that he had sent letters to the Presidents of Russia, China, and the United States (Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Donald Trump), calling on them to convoke a “Summit for Peace and against War,” with the intent of preventing nuclear war in West Asia. “We all make peace, or there will be no peace,” he said. “I am sure [the letter] expresses the sentiment of the majority of humanity.” In a similar letter sent to various governments around the world, and to the entire diplomatic corps in Venezuela, President Maduro urges the Global South to call for such a summit with a unified voice.

In the second letter, dated June 23, President Maduro charges that the situation in West Asia “has entered a phase of maximum tension and violence,” due to the intensified military aggression of Israel and the United States against the sovereign territory of Iran. This, he warns, “threatens to trigger a crisis with catastrophic nuclear consequences for the region and the world….

“In the face of this panorama, Venezuela issues an urgent appeal for the organizations of the Global South, including the Non-Aligned Movement, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Gulf Cooperation Organization, the African Union, BRICS, CELAC, and others, to jointly promote an immediate and full ceasefire in West Asia.” The cessation of hostilities “should be the first step towards a comprehensive political solution, built on the basis of dialogue, legality and respect for sovereignty between states,” he writes.
