The 2025 BRICS Summit over June 6-7 may see the unveiling of a “New Investment Platform” to promote the growth of countries in the Global South.
“In the run-up to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro in early July … the heads of state touched upon the issue of promoting Russian initiatives that were put forward at last year’s BRICS summit in Kazan. These initiatives concern, in particular, a new investment platform. Its task is to promote the economic growth of our countries and partners among representatives of the Global South,” Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov told journalists in June.
During the 2024 BRICS Summit in Kazan, proposals were floated for new financial and trade exchanges that could avoid the risk of exposure to trans-Atlantic institutions. It was there that Russian President Vladimir Putin first raised the idea of creating “new investment platforms” to ensure that credit flows into productive projects, and not speculation.
