Former Knesset Speaker Avrum Burg took a polemical step toward an ecumenical stance with a scathing column posted on his Substack page on April 30. Titled “Treason of the Rabbis,” he writes of the corruption of the rabbinate of Israel, in which rabbis act less like spiritual leaders and more like operatives on the payroll of the government. Much of what he says is highly pointed, but not necessarily unique, as the rabbis of Israel rarely raise a voice in protest against government policies.

However, there is a paragraph following his criticism which is uncharacteristic of such polemics, as he challenges the rabbis to follow the example of Pope Leo XIV in speaking against the tide, to take a stand for peace:
