Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister met in St. Petersburg

Russian President Vladimir Putin received Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg, today. Araghchi had landed in St. Petersburg early this morning, after meetings in Oman and a brief stopover in Islamabad.

The Russian participants accompanying Putin included Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, and the Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces—Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces— Igor Kostyukov, reported the Kremlin transcript of their public remarks.

On the Iranian side, participants included Iran’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia, Kazem Jalali, and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi.

After welcoming Araghchi, Putin reported that last week he had received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Putin said, “I would like to ask you to convey my most sincere gratitude for this, and to reaffirm that Russia—just like Iran—intends to continue fostering our strategic relations.”
