Growing Danger of Conflict Between Nuclear Powers: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov delivered a chilling wake-up call to the blindly arrogant Western powers this Tuesday morning, May 26, in an address to one of the many roundtables held on the first day of the International Security Forum in Moscow: “The chances of nuclear powers engaging in armed confrontation are growing.”

“As a result of the collective West’s destructive actions, a deep and highly charged rift has emerged and persists among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, all of whom are de jure nuclear powers,” Ryabkov stated. “This leads to an escalation of strategic risks, which, I believe, is already evident to everyone, that could result in direct armed conflicts between these countries with potentially catastrophic consequences.”

This much of his address was reported by Russia’s TASS news agency, along with his estimation that, as things stand today, there is little possibility of a U.S.-Russian strategic stability dialogue. Ryabkov reiterated, as have senior Russian officials, that “the current global situation is not conducive to dialogue on strategic stability or issues related to future arms control. Only tangible improvements in U.S. policy toward Russia, if they do occur, could lead us to consider such a possibility.”
