German and international media overlooked statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz one week ago that should have made front page headlines. During the same meeting with students in Marsberg in which he accused Trump of having no strategy in Iran, Merz declared that Ukraine must make territorial concessions to Russia. Merz formulated his statement this way: “Hopefully, at some point there will be a peace treaty with Russia. Then it’s possible that part of Ukraine’s territory will no longer be Ukrainian. If he [Zelensky] wants to convey this to his own people and secure a majority in favor of it, and he has to hold a referendum on the matter, then he must also tell the people at the same time, ‘But I have opened the path to Europe for you.’” In other words, if Kiev makes territorial concessions, there will be peace and a EU membership for Ukraine will be possible.
