Pakistani Chief of the Defense Staff Field Marshall Asim Munir has reportedly departed for Tehran tody where he will hold discussions on Iran-US talks, the establishment of peace in the region, and other important matters, Pakistan TV reported on X today, citing unnamed security sources.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said yesterday that he hoped the Pakistani visit to Tehran would advance diplomacy further. “President’s preference is to do a good deal,” he said. “That’s his preference. It’s always been his preference. If we can get a good deal done, that would be great. I’m not here to tell you that it’s going to happen for sure, but I’m here to tell you that we’re going to do everything we can to see if we can get one.”
Munir’s visit is aimed at bringing the Iranian and US positions closer together, Al Jazeera reported yesterday, citing Iran’s ISNA news agency. “The Iranian text is being discussed in Tehran regarding the overarching framework, some details and confidence-building measures as guarantees,” ISNA reported, adding that “the submitted text has narrowed the gaps to some extent, but further reductions require an end to the temptation for war from Washington.” Munir’s visit is “aimed at narrowing these gaps and reaching the moment for the official announcement of the memorandum of understanding.”
Pakistan’s interior minister, Syed Mohsin Naqvi, the Interior Minister of Pakistan, who traveled to Tehran for the second time this week on Wednesday morning, carried a message from the American side to Tehran, WANA reported this morning. During his second visit to Tehran, Naqvi once again met and held consultations with Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Sayyid Abbas Araghchi, and his Iranian counterpart.
