On May 21, Trump announced that the U.S. is deploying 5,000 troops to Poland. He reportedly said that the decision was sparked by the “successful election” of Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki, whom he “was proud to endorse.”

But in Poland itself, there’s confusion as to what Trump’s announcement actually means. Polish Radio notes that before last week’s decision to halt a planned rotational deployment of one armored brigade combat team, around 10,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Poland. Adding Trump’s promised 5,000 would bring that total to 15,000. But if the 4,000 already halted are factored in, the real figure would be closer to 11,000.
