Albania is swept by a mass protest, which has seen over 100,000 (figures supplied by protest-favorable sources) demonstrating before the government building in Tirana. The protests were ignited by a revolt against the government’s decision to allow a firm close to the Kushner family to build a resort on the Sazan island, but soon became a wider protest against the government. Protesters chant slogans such as “Rama and Berisha in Jail,” referring to the prime minister and the opposition leader.
EIR spoke with Erion Musk, organizing secretary of Shqiperia Behet, a party that supports the protest. Shqiperiabehet is difficult to translate, meaning somehow “Albania Can” or “Albania Rises.” It is a relatively young party and in its first race won 4% in the national elections last year and got one seat in the Parliament. The disproportion between the number of votes (80,000) and the only one seat is due to the electoral law, and a new electoral law is among the priority demands of the protests.
