The Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers concluded its meeting Thursday, capping preparations for the SCO Heads of State Summit set for Bishkek on Aug. 31–Sept. 1.
Founded 25 years ago at the initiative of China, the SCO has since become an important forum for discussion and coordination of global security and stability by nations of the Global Majority, increasingly so in recent years, as the West has doubled down on policies of destabilization and war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov credited Moscow and Beijing as its “driving force,” noting that the SCO has grown over the past quarter-century into what he called a “solid club of like-minded partners” spanning nearly half the world’s population and a third of global GDP, and pointed to Russia and China’s parallel role as founders of the expanding BRICS group, which also continues to garner interest from nations around the world.
