Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Agrees to Build Pantheon To Ukrainian ‘Heroes’

At the suggestion of President Zelensky, the Verkhovna Rada [agreed to build a “Ukrainian national pantheon.”]( https://vz.ru/news/2026/7/1/1431548.html) The memorial will include members of the Banderist organization and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UIA). The remains of those who were buried abroad will be reinterred. This move has created a furor in Poland, since the UIA conducted massive atrocities against Poles living in the territory of Ukraine during WWII. The rift between these two Slavic countries has already done damage to the coalition supporting Zelensky.

While the bill indicates that such a memorial might also include an occasional Nobel prize winner or other individual who had made a real contribution to the world, it will also include members of the UIA, the anti-Semitic Carpathian Sich, and the anti-Bolshevik Galician Army. It would include Ukrainian presidents, except those who were thrown out of office (by the Maidan coup) and no one of note during the period of Soviet Ukraine would be considered, according to laws previously passed by the Rada.
