Trump, the Naval Architect, Chapter 2

Trump’s effort to redesign the Ford-class aircraft carrier according to his whims isn’t stopping with the catapults and weapons elevators. According to a report published in the Washington Post yesterday, he also wants to move the island, the superstructure that rises above the flight deck and from where the ship is commanded and controlled forward from its current location towards the stern of the ship. As with Trump’s demand to replace the electromagnetic catapults with steam catapults, moving the island would necessitate a major redesign that would cost billions of dollars and result in major schedule delays, all because Trump doesn’t like the aesthetics of the current design.

According to one unconfirmed report, Trump’s next innovation will be to add a giant gala ballroom on each aircraft carrier. That would facilitate holding a victory party once the Strait of Hormuz is proclaimed American territory, as Trump otherwise stated over the weekend.
