Aug. 28—In New York City this September 11, at the Salvation Army Hall in Manhattan, the Schiller Institute NYC Chorus and the New York “Ode to Joy” (Daiku) Singers will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks with an extraordinary, live performance of the renowned Ninth Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. The event will also include choral works by Johannes Brahms and Antonín Dvořák, and a selection of Negro spirituals. The Fire Department of New York Ceremonial Unit and Color Guard will also join the event.

The concert will be both an appropriate 25th-year memorial to the heroism of many during the attack on September 11, 2001, and also a celebration of the joy of the creativity of humanity to be able to rise above the challenge of the most severe crises. Beethoven’s music embodies the creative strength of humanity as expressed in its most noble moments, and speaks to us with a power beyond words. It calls up in us a love for humanity, an ability to act with a creative solution even in the face of the most terrifying circumstance of war and of suffering as that which we face today.
