Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting in Montreal European Union functionaries from Brussels, EU Commission Pres. Ursula con der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa today, starting a two day summit. It is billed as strengthening ties between the EU and Canada. AP reported that Von der Leyen, arriving this morning, posted that Europe wants to bring Canada in “as Associate Member of the EU.”

Carney said Oct. 27 that he sees the summit as launching further talks over the year, and that formally joining the EU is not the goal, but rather there should be increased business, travel, study, work and other activity between Canada and the EU.
