Ukraine’s three major ports on the Black Sea—Odessa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhnoye—have been entirely shut to commercial shipping since July 22, TASS reported today. As a result, Ukraine has lost some $6 billion in export revenues.
Some maritime trade continues through Danube River ports—Ukraine’s Izmail and Romania’s Constanza—but “together can potentially account for no more than a third of the exports that previously passed through the ports of Greater Odessa,” TASS wrote. “As a result, in September Ukraine was able to export only 44% of the agricultural products planned for export that month, and exports of metallurgical products ceased completely September ended. Together, these items accounted for about 65% of Ukraine’s exports and annual foreign exchange earnings of about $26 billion.”
