The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that it will spend up to $20 million to provide immigration agents with gloves that can deliver an electric shock. DHS claims that the “CTG-5 G.L.O.V.E.,” which stands for Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter will be used as a “deescalation tool,” but who can miss that the gloves can hide in plain sight the reckless brutality of Trump’s ICE. In an instant these gloves violently put the victim on the ground without guns, tasers, and with minimal physical contact. ICE encounters using GLOVES can be equally violent, but are less likely to attract TV news cameras.
The devices are made by Kentucky-based Compliant Technologies, and have already been used by some U.S. prisons and police departments, according to press accounts. It is reported that the contract for what the DHS calls “conductive distraction and de-escalation devices” runs through March 2027. The manufacturer does not publicly disclose the price of the gloves, but AP reported that ICE plans to purchase thousands of the devices.
