Iranian Government Claims Receipt of Tolls from Ships Crossing Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian government has received revenue from tolls for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz for the first time, the Second Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Hamid Reza Hajibabai said. “The first revenue received from tolls in the Strait of Hormuz has been transferred to the Central Bank’s account,” Hajibabai said, according to Fars News Agency.

This is not the first such report of Iranian receipt of tolls, but it may indicate the beginning of the institutionalization of the process.

On April 23 RIA Novosti reports that at the end of March, the Islamic Republic began drafting a law on Hormuz. It includes, among other things, charging a toll in rials and banning transit for the United States, Israel, and countries that support sanctions against Tehran. The document has not yet been finalized.
