An EU Commission project for a “Savings and Investment Union” discussed in 2025, and personally pushed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, but not realized then, is apparently being revived now to make extra funds available for projects of rearmament.
The concept is to tap savings accounts in the total range of up to 10 trillion euros—3.4 trillion of these in Germany alone, on a so-called voluntary basis at the beginning, but then shift to mandatory. The obsession of the EU bureaucracy with collecting funds for the money-hungry military-industrial sector implies this. The “voluntary” phase would turn mandatory at some point not so far in the future. This discussion must be watched closely, as it amounts to an expropriation of citizens for an insane policy.
