The Pentagon issued a statement yesterday, reporting that 135 days after the U.S. signed the peace agreement with the Taliban, the U.S. military has done what it promised to do.
“As stipulated in the agreement, the United States agreed to reduce its forces in Afghanistan to 8,600 and withdraw from five bases. We have met this obligation. U.S. forces in Afghanistan remain in the mid-8,000s and five bases formerly occupied by U.S. forces have been transferred to our Afghan partners,” the statement, attributed to Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman, said. Hoffman noted that the train-and-advise mission with the Afghan security force continues, as does the counter-terrorism mission. “The United States honors its obligations,” he concluded. “All sides should reduce violence and embark on intra-Afghan negotiations capable of achieving a negotiated and lasting peace for Afghanistan.”
