Continuing his efforts to rebuild the leadership role which Mexico had traditionally played in Ibero-America before the neoliberals took over, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has invited Bolivian President Luis Arce to join him on March 25 for another of the many celebrations his government is organizing to mark the bicentennial of Mexico’s Independence. Last month, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez was the guest of honor for one such event; Arce will be the guest of honor at the Original Peoples’ Resistance Day.
Last week, Arce enthusiastically welcomed the return of María Teresa Mercado as Mexico’s Ambassador to his government. Mercado had been Ambassador to President Evo Morales’s government, and played a crucial role in the Argentine-Mexican operation to save Evo’s life by evacuating him from the country when it became clear the interim “government” installed after a coup was intent on eliminating him. Mexico refused to recognize that “government,” whose leaders have just been arrested and charged by Arce’s government.
