BoJo Likens Ukraine's Resistance to Russia to Britain's "Finest Hour" of Anti-Nazi Resistance in World War II

Imagining himself to be a reincarnated Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, virtually today and, in language that bore no resemblance to reality, told the parliamentarians that they were living through their “finest hour,” the famous line Churchill used in describing Britain’s resistance to the onslaught of Nazi air raids in World War II. Ukraine’s resistance was “one of the most glorious chapters in military history,” he said. “I have one message for you today, Ukraine will win. Ukrainians taught the world that the brutal force of an aggressor counts for nothing against the moral force of people determined to be free,” Johnson added.

Announcing a $376 million package of new military aid, Johnson asserted that “Ukraine will win,” and “Ukraine will be free,” because its soldiers fought “with the energy and courage of lions.” Repeating the lie that Russia had intended to take Kiev and failed, he bellowed, “You have beaten [the Russians] back from Kyiv. You have exploded the myth of Putin’s invincibility, and you have written one of the most glorious chapters in military history and in the life of your country. An epic chapter in your national story that will be remembered and recounted for generations to come.”

The florid rhetoric to one side, Bojo told his audience that the weapons will keep coming into the country in quantity, as long as necessary—to keep the war going. “We will carry on supplying Ukraine...with weapons, funding, and humanitarian aid, until we have achieved our long-term goal, which must be so to fortify Ukraine that no one will ever dare to attack you again. It is precisely because of your valor, your courage, your sacrifice, that Ukrainians now control your own destiny. You are the masters of your fate, and no one can or should impose anything on Ukrainians. We in the UK will be guided by you and we are proud to be your friends.”
