A four-way summit in Madrid between the leaders of Turkey, Sweden, and Finland and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ended with an agreement that Turkey will support the two Nordic countries’ bids to join the North Atlantic alliance. Turkey “got what it wanted” from Sweden and Finland before agreeing to back their drives to join the NATO defense alliance, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s office said, reported the Turkish daily Hurriyet. “Turkey has made significant gains in the fight against terrorist organisations,” said the Turkish statement. Stoltenberg said, “[W]e now have an agreement that paves the way for Finland and Sweden to join NATO.” That could happen as early as Wednesday, he added.
