Lula Calls for Mobilization Against ‘Imminent’ Assange Extradition

“I view with concern the imminent possibility of Julian Assange being extradited” from Britain to the United States, Brazilian President Lula da Silva warned in a June 10 tweet, calling for “everyone” to mobilize to block such a move: “Assange did important work denouncing the illegitimate actions of one State against another. His imprisonment goes against democracy and freedom of the press. It is important that we all mobilize in his defense.” (https://twitter.com/LulaOficial/status/1667660120988307457 )

On June 9, Justice Jonathan Swift of Britain’s High Court had rejected all eight grounds for Assange’s appeal seeking to block extradition to the United States. Assange’s wife, Stella, told reporters that Assange will file a renewed application for appeal at the High Court on June 13, which will proceed to a public hearing before two new High Court justices. She added:
