The amazing victory of Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle, who broke his own world record by clocking the 100-meter freestyle in 46.40 seconds, has become a focus of paranoia amongst China-haters. While he had been subjected to 21 doping tests since May, including for the Olympics, he was clean on every one of them.
According to the BBC, Chinese swimmers headed to Paris were drug-tested twice as much as some other nations, which, in turn, has fueled accusations of a conspiracy to disrupt their performance. The head of media relations for the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), James Fitzgerald, told the BBC: “Certain individuals [in the US] are attempting to score political points purely on the basis that the athletes in question are Chinese.”
