‘Uncommitted’ Movement Won’t Back Harris Formally

In an action which has potential to change Michigan’s presidential vote on Nov. 5, the leaders of the “Uncommitted” movement of Arab-Americans and young voters announced Sept. 19 that they will not mobilize support for Kamala Harris for President, while at the same time calling on supporters to vote against Trump, and not to vote for Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Their statement also said: “Today, the Uncommitted National Movement announces that as we continue advocating for livesaving policy change which ends the bombing of Gaza and ends U.S. support for the Israeli military’s war crimes, Harris’s unwillingness to shift on unconditional weapons policy, or to even make a clear campaign statement in support of upholding existing U.S. and international rights law, has made it impossible for us to endorse her.” The DNC’s refusal to allow any uncommitted delegate to speak to the Party also contributed.

Essentially the leaders, such as Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s sister Layla Elabed, are notifying the Party leadership politely that they won’t be mobilizing turnout, while at the same time implicitly endorsing a Harris victory to stay inside Democratic National Committee guardrails.
