A year-end roundup in the Baltic Sentinel shows the degree of NATO’s military buildup in the Baltic Sea region. The steps taken in 2024 include, but are not limited to, the following developments, which most dangerously include the placement of long-range ATACMS missiles in the Baltic states.

The command elements of the German 45th Brigade, which is eventually expected to number 4,800 troops, arrived in Lithuania in April. In July, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Latvia where the Canada-led enhanced forward presence battle group will be expanded to the level of an international brigade of 3,500 soldiers. In September, NATO announced that the headquarters for the Northern European land forces (MCLCC) will be located in Mikkeli, Finland. On Oct.17, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur and U.K. Defense Minister John Healey signed a road map stating that the U.K. will, in addition to its forward presence battalion battle group stationed in Tapa, assign its 4th Brigade to reinforce Estonia.
