March 4, 2025 (EIRNS)—The “pause” in U.S. military support to Ukraine first announced “on background” by the White House last night and then confirmed this morning by Jason Miller, a senior advisor to President Donald Trump, came only hours after U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the House of Commons that Trump wouldn’t do it. Before Starmer spoke, there were already press rumors that Trump would withdraw military aid to Ukraine. “I have not seen reports of the United States withdrawing support for Ukraine, and, as I understand it, that is not its position,” Starmer said in response to a question about the rumors from Scottish National Party parliamentary leader Stephen Flynn. The Guardian commented: “Now it turns out that Flynn was right, and Starmer was wrong, because a few hours after Starmer’s statement to the Commons the White House suspended all military aid to Ukraine.”
Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said this morning that Starmer was humiliated. “By suspending all military aid to Ukraine, Donald Trump has humiliated the people who pretended he was a reliable ally only in search of peace,” he said, referring to statements made by Starmer at the London summit on March 2. “The U.K. and Europe must seize frozen Russian assets to resist Putin’s unjust and savage war.”
Graham Stuart, a Conservative MP, went even further, posting a message on social media saying it is time to consider whether Trump is actually a Russian asset. “We have to consider the possibility that President Trump is a Russian asset,” he said. “If so, Trump’s acquisition is the crowning achievement of Putin’s FSB career—and Europe is on its own.”
