Wang Yi NPC Press Conference Lays Out the Line on U.S.-China Relations

March 7, 2025 (EIRNS)—Holding the foreign policy press conference at the China’s National People’s Congress on March 7, Foreign Minister Wang Yi clarified Beijing’s concerns regarding the U.S. attitude toward China. He repeatedly emphasized China’s role as a stabilizing and constructive force, and stressed the importance of trust, respect and following international rules. He said that China provides “certainty in an uncertain world,” and described the country as “a just and righteous force for global peace and stability.” “It will always be a staunch defender of national interests, and won’t be undermined by maximum pressure, threats or blackmail,” Wang said.

In response to a question from CNN on President Trump’s “America First” policy, U.S.-China relations and the new sanctions, Wang replied that “one cannot put selfish interests before principle.” “At the Paris Peace Conference over 100 years ago, the Chinese asked a question resonating across the ages: Does right prevail over might, or does might make right? New China stands firm on the side of international justice, and resolutely opposes power politics and hegemony. … A big country should honor its international obligations and fulfill its due responsibilities. It should not put selfish interests before principles, still less wield its power to bully the weak. A saying in the West goes, ‘There are no eternal friends, only permanent interests.’ But we in China believe that friends should be permanent and we should pursue common interests.”

He pointed out that President Xi Jinping has called on all countries to “develop together the global village as our common home. …

“History will prove that a real winner is the one that keeps in mind the interests of all, and that a community with a shared future for mankind will ensure that the world belongs to every country, and that everyone will have a bright future,” he concluded.
