Romanians went to the polls on Sunday, May 18, to elect their next President.
George Simion, the candidate endorsed by Cailin Georgescu—whose campaign was banned based on unsupported claims of Russian interference—was leading in the polls going into today’s presidential election in Romania.
Initial exit polls put Simion at approximately 45%, with his pro-EU opponent Nicușor Dan at 55%. These are not official results, and they do not include any exit polling of the Romanian diaspora, who voted in the election while outside the country.
Dan has been the mayor of Bucharest since 2020.
